Got questions about how to use, wash, or care for your beeswax wraps?
You're in the right place. Below you'll find answers to our most common customer queries, from food safety and freezer use to how long your wrap will last. Whether you're a first-time user or a seasoned wrap fan, these tips will help you get the most out of your Queen Bee Wraps.
What are Queen Bee Wraps made from?
Each wrap is handmade in East Lothian, Scotland, using certified food-grade white beeswax (E901), dammar tree resin, and jojoba oil, all infused into 100% cotton fabric.
We only use ingredients that are safe, long-lasting, and sustainably sourced. Even our packaging and postal boxes are made from 100% recycled paper.
How do I wash my beeswax wrap?
Wash your wrap in cool water with a mild, eco-friendly washing-up liquid such as Ecover, Bio D, or Method. Use your hands to gently rub the surface clean. If needed, a soft brush can be used with light pressure on stubborn marks.
Do not use hot water, as it can melt the wax. After washing, leave your wrap to air dry. Once dry, roll or fold it and store in a cool, dry place.
Keep your wraps out of dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, tumble dryers, or anywhere hot.
How do I refresh a worn wax wrap?
If your wrap is looking a bit tired, there are two easy ways to bring it back to life using heat. Both methods melt and redistribute the wax for a fresh finish. Shop refresher blocks
Oven method
Place a silicone baking mat on an old cookie sheet and lay your wrap flat on top. Put it in a 100°C oven for one to two minutes until the wax re-melts. Carefully remove it by the corners and hang it up quickly before the wax cools. If needed, sprinkle a small amount of grated wax over dry areas before heating. Use sparingly.
Ironing method
Cover your ironing board with a sheet of parchment paper. Place the wrap on top, then cover it with another large piece of parchment. Use a medium-heat iron to press over the top. This melts and evens out the wax. Be sure the parchment fully covers the workspace to avoid mess. You can reuse the paper later by storing it wax side in.

What’s great about beeswax?
Beeswax is a natural, non-toxic material with anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. It helps keep things clean and reduces the risk of contamination.
Unlike plastic, beeswax is breathable and waterproof at the same time. It protects your food from getting wet or drying out while helping lock in moisture, flavour, and freshness.
It’s also non-allergenic, making it a safe and reliable option for everyday food use.
How do I use my Queen Bee Wrap?
Scrunch your new wrap gently in your hands to activate its natural stickiness. Then use the warmth of your hands to shape and seal it around your food or container.
Choose a wrap size that’s bigger than what you’re covering. A small wrap should fully cover something like a sliced onion or lime. When covering a bowl or plate, aim for the wrap to reach at least halfway down the sides for a secure fit.
How long will the beeswax wrap last?
With regular use and proper care, your beeswax wrap can last around 12 months, sometimes longer. Its lifespan depends on how often it’s used and how gently it’s cleaned.
Avoid exposing it to hot surfaces or water over 60°C (140°F), as heat can melt the wax coating and shorten its life. You can easily restore and refresh your wrap when needed using our guide or video.
Why is my beeswax wrap leaving residue on dishes?
This is perfectly normal and usually a sign that your wrap is well-coated and made to last. When a Queen Bee Wrap is new, it may leave a light beeswax residue on glass bowls, plates, or even your hands.
Thankfully, this residue is harmless, our natural formula is actually soothing to skin, like a hand balm. Just rub your hands together or wash as normal.
The wax coating will gradually reduce with use and washing. When wrapping food, there’s little risk of wax transfer because you’re not applying the same pressure as when sealing containers. We use 100% pure beeswax, fully tested and certified for food use. If needed, any residue on dishes can be easily cleaned off with hot soapy water or in the dishwasher.
Why is my beeswax wrap no longer sticky?
If your wrap has worked well until now, it may simply need a refresh. Beeswax naturally loses tackiness over time, especially with regular use. Follow our wrap refreshing guide to bring it back to life.
Other factors can affect stickiness too. Different brands (and homemade wraps) use varying wax blends and fabrics. When brand new or cold, a wrap might feel stiff; just scrunch it in your hands to warm and activate the wax.
Our wraps are made to last around a year, and even longer with proper care. If your wrap needs a boost, try one of our refresher blocks to re-coat and restore its grip, even if it’s not a Queen Bee Wrap.
Do beeswax wraps really replace cling film?
Yes, beeswax wraps are a natural and reusable alternative to cling film. They work best for covering bowls and wrapping sandwiches, cheese, fruit, and bread. Unlike cling film, they’re breathable, which helps keep food fresher for longer. They’re not suitable for liquids or raw meat, but for most day-to-day uses, a wrap does the job beautifully—again and again.
Are Queen Bee Wraps vegan?
No, our wraps are not vegan as they contain beeswax, which is a natural product made by honeybees. However, our wax is responsibly sourced from East African farms that support bee-friendly practices and sustainable beekeeping.
Can I freeze food in a beeswax wrap?
Yes, beeswax wraps can be used to store food in the freezer for short periods. We recommend using them for things like chopped fruit, herbs, or bread rolls. Just let the wrap come to room temperature before unwrapping to prevent cracking.
Do your wraps contain pine resin? I have allergies.
No — we use dammar resin instead of pine resin. It’s filtered for purity, has a gentler scent, and contains fewer compounds that typically cause sensitivity. Our formula was chosen with delicate noses and allergen concerns in mind.
Can I microwave food in a beeswax wrap?
No — please never use beeswax wraps in a microwave. High heat will melt the wax and damage the wrap, and could even cause a fire hazard. Instead, remove the wrap before heating and store it for reuse.
Can I use beeswax wraps on hot food or containers?
No — always let food and containers cool before wrapping. Beeswax melts at around 62°C, so using it on hot items can damage the wrap and leave wax behind. Only wrap once food is room temperature or cooler.
Can I take beeswax wraps through airport security?
Yes, beeswax wraps are solid, not liquid, so they’re safe to take in hand luggage when flying. They’re great for eco-friendly travel snacks and can be reused throughout your trip.
What wrap sizes are best for different foods?
Small wraps (18cm) are ideal for cut fruit, onions, or snack bars. Medium wraps (26cm) work well for sandwiches, cheese, or covering bowls. Large wraps (32–35cm) are best for bread, family-size leftovers, or big salad bowls. A bigger wrap always gives a better seal. Browse our full range of wraps.
Can I compost my beeswax wrap when it's worn out?
Yes, Queen Bee Wraps are fully compostable. Once the wax coating wears out, simply cut the wrap into strips and add it to your compost bin. They also make excellent natural firelighters for log burners or BBQs.
Are Queen Bee Wraps safe for school lunches?
Absolutely. They’re made from certified food-safe ingredients and contain no harsh chemicals. Wraps are a fun and practical way to pack sandwiches, fruit, or baked snacks in kids’ lunchboxes — without plastic waste.
